Speeding up your workflow doesn’t have to be complicated. If you’ve ever found yourself waiting for audio extraction tasks to complete, I’ve got a simple, effective method to turbocharge the process. In this post, I’ll show you how to extract audio from video files using a clever RAM-based trick and the powerful FFmpeg tool, making your work faster and more efficient than ever.

The Problem: Slow Audio Extraction

Extracting audio from video files typically involves:

  1. Reading large video files from storage.
  2. Writing the extracted audio back to disk.

This can feel sluggish, especially if you’re working with traditional hard drives or if your SSD is under heavy load. Waiting around for this process isn’t just boring — it’s inefficient.

The Solution: A RAM-Based Performance Boost

The trick? Using your computer’s RAM to temporarily store files while extracting audio. RAM is much faster than traditional storage, so tasks like reading and writing files happen almost instantly.

To make the process even more robust, I use FFmpeg for audio extraction and streamline dependencies with the help of Nix, a powerful package…
